You Are Your Best Teacher

If you've practiced with me at all, especially a more "advanced" asana (posture) then chances are that you've heard me say, "you are your best teacher." What do I mean by that?

In the pic above, I'm in a pose that according to a teacher with over 20 years of experience at the time told me that it was something that my body simply would never be able to do! I can't recall her exact reasoning, the conversation took place over a decade ago during my first teacher training, but it had something to do with the shape of my rib cage. The thing about the upward facing bow pose, is that it was something that I knew the mechanics of pretty well and was confident teaching it to others. Then one day I heard a whisper that said, "teach it to yourself the way that you teach it to your students," and voila, up I went!

I was successful because I literally allowed my body to guide me into the posture. Now, over the years, I have been able to refine the pose with additional guidance from my teachers such as finding the heart anchor point and fully integrating my shoulders which allows for me to get into the one-leg variation with ease.

All of this to say that the purpose of the asana practice is to allow ourselves to be challenged mentally, physically and sometimes even spiritually on the safety of our mats so that we can more confidently face the many challenges that life will throw our way.

Join me this week on Tuesday and Thursday at 9:00 Am ET so that we can face life's challenges in community. Register here: https://www.toembodyyoga.com/offerings
