April is Earth Month! What are you plans to keep our planet livable? Since most reading this are in the States, we're pretty lucky to be in a country that is well resourced. But some smaller, poorer countries aren't so lucky. One of the things to keep in mind, is that our decisions as consumers directly effects folks a world away often adversely.

Here are some things that you can do, right now, to lower your carbon footprint and slow the warming and waste on our planet:

  1. Adopt a plant-based diet. Most deforestation in the Amazon forest is to make space for cows to graze. These cows will be turned into steak and hamburger and sent overseas for consumption. Not only does this put our entire planet into peril, but it also displaces native tribes that have inhabited the forest for generations.
  2. De-lawn and use native plants instead. By de-lawning, you can increase biodiversity and support our pollinators. Additionally, you won't need chemical fertilizers and as a bonus can forgo mowing our paying someone to mow for you.
  3. Drastically reduce plastic use. Y'all know how I love bamboo. For a lot of things made of plastic you can replace with biodegradable and fast growing bamboo. It's difficult to get rid of all of your plastic but you can drastically reduce it if you know where to look. If you're local to the DMV, you can check out MOM's Organic market for toothbrushes, cleaning supplies, and personal care items that are not packaged in or made of plastic. Grove.co is also a great online shop for reducing plastic use.
