For me, the practice of Yoga is the most life-enhancing thing that ever happened to me. Not only has it transformed my physical body, but it has grown my spirit and expanded my mind. Here are five ways that my yoga journey has enhanced my life.
I am physically stronger and have increased endurance. If you've ever practice Surya Namaskar A or B (Sun Salutations), then you know that it is quite a rigorous sequence when done with alignment in a vinyasa (with breath) style. When I began practicing Yoga (15 or 16?) years ago, I would struggle to get through 3 sets. Currently, the most I've done in one session is over 40 rounds!
I learned how to use my breath as a tool to manage stress. There is something almost magical that happens when I simply pause, observe the inhale, observe the space of emptiness then observe the exhale. If you haven't done this, try it! Do it right now.
I learned how to meditate and can drop "down and in" at will which is a vital skill to have in this moment of history. Wouldn't you agree?
I have learned, through my teaching, to become a better student. When I thank my "students" at the end of each class for being my teachers, it is with the deepest sincerity and I treasure every little nugget of wisdom that they've shared about their lives. I treasure that they allow me to observe their practice which teaches me how to give clearer instruction and I love their questions that encourage me to search for the most informed answer.
I have met, taught, worked with, spoken to and otherwise engaged with AMAZING people from all over the world and reunited with friends from high school, old jobs and what seems like past lives. This would not have happened but for yoga.
