Everyday is Earth Day!

I hope that you have enjoyed my Earth Month series of posts and class themes. But we all know that we must honor our precious planet everyday for our survival, if for no other reason. I thought that it would be nice to wrap up this month with a list of some of the books, documentaries and films that have inspired my journey as a wanna be Earth Activist.

  1. I have probably mentioned these books before but Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents are MUST reads. They are works of fiction that offer a very possible glimpse into our near future if we don't act now to heal our planet. They are appropriate (in my opinion) for middle schoolers and up.
  2. The Sacred Balance: Rediscovering Our Place in Nature by David Suzuki. The author is a biologist and offers an approachable read that invites the reader to understand their connection with all beings and things on this planet. His book was the beginning of my understanding of the magic of soil among other things. This is also appropriate for middle schoolers and up.
  3. The films Cowspiracy and Seaspiracy document how big agriculture and big fishing effect the biodiversity of our planet and our own long-term health.
  4. The Biggest Little Farm and The Biggest Little Farm the Return document how a couple transform barren land that was stripped of its nutrients due to mono crop farming into a farm paradise. This documentary amplifies the need for biodiversity and shows the interconnection of all living beings. Appropriate for all ages.
  5. And finally a classic movie: Soilent Green. A possible future if we don't change our ways. I would say more, but I don't want to spoil the ending!

There are far, far more that I could list but this is a good start. Please let me know which you have seen/read and your thoughts and of course, please share your favorites with me.

I will be teaching tomorrow on my rubber mat, cotton blankets and cork blocks! See you Monday at 12:30 and/or Thursday at 9:00 AM. Register here: https://www.toembodyyoga.com/offerings
