Peace

I end my classes the same way every time: Know that the peace that you discovered inside you is a peace to which you may always return. Continued peace be with you! Om Shanti Om...

According to Wikipedia, there are currently 24 full scale wars in the world right now and many, many other "conflicts" and "armed skirmishes." Although the practices of yoga and meditation cannot stop these crimes against humanity and nature, it can help us develop a sense of balance to face a hostile world. Below are my tips for navigating these troubling energies:

  1. Stay informed but don't binge on the news. As one of my teachers, Rod Stryker, pointed out, news organizations are necessary but they are also a business. Their business is to keep you glued to the screen and the best way to do this is by inciting a certain amount of fear which causes chemical reactions in the body to make it harder to look away. Take in your news mindfully and set a time limit for exposure.
  2. Move your body. Do Yoga. Go for a walk/run. Physically remove the stress from your body through exercise.
  3. Meditate. Take time to go silent and be still. Later this week I will be sending out an audio meditation practice to help you do just that.
  4. Rest. One way to do this is to absolutely not watch the news before bed (see point one). Also, if your mind is stuck on what is happening, try reading/listening to a light book or listening to calming music or white noise. It may also be helpful to bathe or shower just before bed to help the body relax.
  5. Let your feelings and thoughts out via conversation or by journaling.
