A Choice...

Some how, some way my baby brother became more wise than me. Tuesday, March 14th was my mother's birthday and I took the day off from teaching.

My brothers and I went to visit my mother's grave to lay flowers. It was odd, to the say the least, especially because our mother was not a big believer in visiting graves. "The person isn't there, so what's the point?" she would say.

As we were walking to her spot under the trees in Annapolis, MD I paused and said, "This sucks. Visiting her here on her birthday, sucks!"

It was then that my baby brother, Mitch, told me this, "I'm happy that she was born. I'm happy that it's her birthday. Today, I choose to be happy."

Conversations like this, are why relationships matter. This is why community matters.

Those few words spoken to me by Mitch shifted my day from deep sadness to profound joy. I too was glad that Jo-Ann was born and her birthday is, in fact, a happy day.
