Angry? There's a Goddess for That!

Much of the myth for this month's theme celebrating the Divine Feminine comes from the Devimahatmya translated by Devadatta Kali. It is an ancient Indian text in the Shaikta tradition and is all about the power of Devi as she defeats the demons that want to constrict the world and stop progress.

You see, there are two asuras (demons) in our tale that have decided to take away Devi's autonomy. They are angry that she refuses to wed either of them and threaten to drag her from atop Himalaya by her hair, kicking and screaming because how dare a "woman" stand in her own power? Not only do they not know to whom they are speaking but they are tragically unaware of the force that they have awakened.

As the text reads:

From her scowling brow, Kali sprang forth, frightful of countenance and armed with sword and noose, bearing a strange skull-topped staff, adorned with a garland of skulls and clad in a tiger's skin...

Kali is agora: she is never not fierce. Kali literally devours her enemies and laughs about it. She enters battle with a scream and all of Creation goes silent. She arises to defend autonomy, give voice and restore justice. Kali takes back what has been taken and offers no apology.

Kali is awake.
