What I Learned About

Writing this Week

It was cold this weekend and I'm glad that we broke out of it today. I am a bit wary of the upcoming 60 degree temperatures later this week with it being February and all.

Anywho, I did learn some things about myself and my creative process this weekend. I'll share them here with you and maybe you will be inspired to start or continue your own creative journey.

  1. Rest. Last Thursday I returned to my full work schedule that includes driving to a DC elementary school, teaching three classes there and then going to Chevy Chase to teach my one and only hybrid class. I was tired! I didn't realize how tired I was until I became sloth-like on Friday after teaching my corporate client on-line, leaving the couch only to walk Malcolm. During my doing-nothing-ness, I watched Wakanda Forever....
  2. Art = Inspiration. Wakanda Forever is the sequel to Black Panther that starred Chadwick Boseman who died from cancer at the age of 43. Wakanda Forever is partly a tribute to him and had scenes that reminded me of my own grief journey. Director and Writer Ryan Coogler's story and eye gave me all of the feels and I cried several times while viewing. It is a beautiful film.
  3. Act on Your Inspiration. I couldn't get Wakanda Forever off of my mind especially several scenes where Shuri (the new Black Panther) describes her grief journey: the shock, the guilt, the helplessness. I figured the only way to move forward with my day was to write about it in my memoir. It turned out to be a strong chapter that not only referenced Wakanda Forever but also how our human experience is connected through the arts.
